Whether you’re new to the world of websites or are an experienced web developer, there is a lot of information that can be overwhelming. Tasks like registering domains and finding web hosting can seem daunting, but understanding the difference between the two is important to getting started on your website. Read on to find out more about the differences between web hosting and domain registration, as well as what they both entail.
When you think of it, a website is just a collection of files that are stored online. These files are accessed by visitors using a browser, which in turn tells the server where to get those files from. Those servers are located on a web hosting company’s servers, and that is what enables visitors to view your site. The web hosting company also provides the hardware and software that is necessary to host your site, which can include a variety of different software and programs.
If you want to keep your costs low, it is possible to purchase your domain name and web hosting from the same company. This can be a great option because it often includes many of the tools you need to set up your site and get it running, such as a content management system (CMS).
However, you can also purchase your domain name at a registrar outside of your web hosting provider and then "point" it to your hosting account. This is a bit more complicated and requires you to change the DNS settings on your domain, but it can be done.
One important thing to remember about domain names and hosting is that you will need to renew both of them regularly, usually once a year. The good news is that most web hosts will send you a reminder about when your plans are up for renewal, so you don’t have to worry about forgetting.
