The subject line is often the first element of an email a recipient encounters, and the best email subject lines grab attention, communicate value and promote action at a glance. This is especially true for mobile email, where recipients can only take in three to five words at a time.
As such, it’s important to focus on creating a compelling message that is both clear and concise.
A good way to do this is to ask for feedback and use multiple people as a test group. Sit down with employees, colleagues or even family members and discuss ideas, tossing them around until you find a subject line that strikes the right balance of curiosity and clarity.
Using a call to action in your subject line is another great way to increase open rates. This can be in the form of a question, a command or a statement. However, you’ll want to make sure that the action is aligned with the content of the email to avoid causing confusion or generating a negative response in your audience.
One of the most effective ways to get your audience’s attention is to tap into their fear of missing out (FOMO). You can do this by framing the benefits of your email in a way that appeals to people’s curiosity. Examples include mentioning a trending topic or stating that something is going to expire soon.
Curiosity can also be generated by a subject line that hints at a surprise or reward within the email. This is a great tactic for encouraging open rates in the short term, but be careful not to over-use it. Over time, your audience may become conditioned to your tactics and start ignoring your emails altogether or reporting them as spam.
People will also be more likely to open an email if they know that the sender has a mutual connection with them. Using a personal name in your subject line, or a variant of it, can help create this impression and build trust.
In addition, you can use a subject line that references a popular song or TV show to add an instant element of intrigue. Incorporating onomatopoeia, which are words that imitate or resemble sounds, can also be an interesting way to catch attention and generate interest in your email. Just be sure to keep the tone professional and align it with your brand voice. Doing so will ensure that your audience feels at ease when opening and reading the contents of your email.
